Poem

The Flight Log (2005)
Poem by Feng-Hsu Lee
English Translation by Yi-Yin Lee

Stars of Night

Ducking in the skyscrapers against the urban night,
stars sometimes peep at the world beneath the dusky clouds.
Their twinkling is never hilariously gorgeous but still glamorous.

I never remember when I forgot them.
But after the glittering of fireworks dies down with the bravo above the harbor,
the shimmer of stars remains,
watching over the people beneath who have kept daydreaming.

Stars reminds me of the dream I used to have when I was a child
That I flied to the promising future with them,
following their twinkling light into the boundless universe.

Looking up at the star in the night, she remains,
ready to carry me on to all the dreams I once had.

Bright Blue Sky

Bright blue sky reminds me of an unhappy memory of childhood.
I cried bitterly because of a bad scold.
Tear in my eyes blurred and wetted clouds above the sky.

A red dragonfly passes me when
I tread on the muddy ground.
Smiling, I seem to see the child I once was in the pale uniform,
weeping and walking on the country road.

Standing on the pier,
I held a string whose other side was attached to the kite my father gave me.
And I released my clench and let the kite go;
the kite rode on the wind, flying to the faraway horizon.

I watched the kite flying as
the kite lifted up my leaden mood.
I do hope that my dream will fly like the kite to
the bright blue sky that I as the child cherished.

A Pair of Wings

I want to sing a song,
a song from the bottom of my heart,
which encourages and comforts me when I am depressed.

I come into the open sky
with the company of my gleeful song.
I have neither fear nor panic,
For I follow the sound of my heart and approach
steadily to the inner dream deep in my heart.

I have rugged mountains to climb and the rigorous weather to confront,
But I will not lose my nerve,
for the singing will keep me warm.

The steadfast singing will lend me a pair of wings.
With the kite and the star, I’ll fly over the rugged mountains
To the dream harbored in me.

This is the world premiere recording.
